词组 everytime, every time
释义 everytime, every time
Every and time form a common adverbial phrase that is normally written as two words ("They'll do it every time"; "Every time it rains ..."). There is, however, a persistent tendency to treat this two-word phrase as a single-word adverb, especially when it occurs at the beginning of a clause and is essentially synonymous with whenever:
Everytime I read an Irish story —Irish Statesman, 13 Sept. 1924
... and everytime the business failed, we children inherited a new legacy —Charles Jones, quoted in Psychology Today, April 1968
Everytime a field was cleared of timber —Julian Fish, Early American Life, April 1976
Such usage seems to be growing slowly more common, but the two-word styling is still more widely preferred. As Copperud 1980 notes, no dictionary has yet entered the single word everytime.
