释义 | fact 1. Quite a few phrases built around fact—the fact that, in point of fact, and the fact is, for example—are attacked in various handbooks as wordy deadwood. They undoubtedly are in many cases. What few commentators seem to notice, however, is that such phrases serve just as often to help the writer get a sentence organized or make an awkward transition. Try deleting or replacing the fact phrase in these examples and see if you have improved things or not: • We might as well get used to the fact that no head of state down there can stay in office without a policy of nationalizing foreign holdings —James M. Garvin, Center Report, June 1972 • The fact is not that officials do uniquely badly but that they are uniquely vulnerable —Gowers 1948 • And the fact seems to be that it needed just one more book to clinch my business —Robert Frost, letter, 17 Sept. 1914 • The plain fact is that the President is not really a very good politician —Stewart Alsop, Atlantic, February 1972 • Although Al Capone was easily the best-known gangster of his own or any other time, he was in point of fact rather a parochial figure —Joseph Epstein, Commentary, January 1972 • Our newfound fascination with China should not blind us to the fact that American relations with Japan are much more important to U.S. security — Leslie H. Gelb & Morton H. Halperin, Harper's, November 1971 • I can see no reason why the fact that Mr. Kallman and I have been close friends for over thirty years should debar me from reviewing him —W. H. Auden, Harper's, March 1972 • We're not constantly made aware of the fact that the writer understands what he's talking about — Kingsley Amis, quoted in The Writer's Place, ed. Peter Firchow, 1974 • Apart, however, from the fact that he was a younger son ... —P. G. Wodehouse, Something Fresh, 1915 We are not recommending that you plug these phrases into every other paragraph; like any verbal tic they can grow annoying. But you should be aware that they can secure a needed emphasis, effect a smooth transition, or otherwise make themselves useful stylistically. They are not always superfluous. 2.See true facts. |
