词组 | idle |
释义 | idle Idle has been used as a transitive verb meaning "to make idle" since the 18th century, but such usage has become common only in the past several decades. Its current popularity is chiefly journalistic. It occurs in reports about workers who are not working, usually because of a strike, and in reports about athletes who are not playing, usually because of injuries or illness: • ... its men were idled amid the walkout by two locals —Peter Schuck & Harrison Wellford, Harper's, May 1972 • ... idled for part of two seasons with a knee injury —Ed Gillooly, Boston Sunday Advertiser, 10 Oct. 1971 This use of idle has fared well among usage commentators. Harper 1975, 1985 considers its acceptability beyond question, and the usage panel of Heritage 1982 approves it "on all levels of speech and writing." |
