词组 | abusage |
释义 | abusage Nickles 1974 labels abusage "an obsolete and needless form of abuse." Needless it may be, but it is not obsolete. The OED has only 16th- and 17th-century citations, but Eric Partridge revived the word in the title of his 1942 book: Usage and Abusage. Since Partridge revived it the word has been limited in use to commentators on English usage: • ... Edwin Newman was called on to open the proceedings on the strength of his two books on English abusage —John Simon, Esquire, June 1977 • There is a limit to the propriety of rejecting new usage, or abusage —Anthony Burgess, Saturday Rev., 2 Sept. 1978 • According to recent reports ... the dictionary "lays down the law" about word usage and abusage —Ken Kister, Library Jour., 15 Nov. 1979 |
