词组 barely
释义 barely
A couple of handbooks mention constructions with barely that they feel should be avoided. One comments on this sort of construction:
He had barely begun his judicial experience, however, when the United States was drawn into World War I —Current Biography 1951
The handbook warns against the use of than in place of when. All our examples of this construction from edited prose use when, but it is not an especially frequent construction.
The other, a Schoolbook, warns against using a negative verb with barely in this sort of construction:
And you could barely see the black lines of the trees —R. H. Newman, Far from Home, 1941
... he was trying to talk last time he was up here and he barely could talk above a whisper —Birch Monroe, quoted in Bluegrass Unlimited, September 1982
In these you are supposed to avoid couldn't, on the grounds that couldn't barely constitutes a double negative. The couldn't barely construction may exist in speech and student writing, but it is unattested in our files of edited prose.
The likelihood is that these books have made entries for barely on the basis of constructions that are much more likely with hardly. See hardly.
Here are some examples of the most common uses of barely:
... so slight a movement it was barely noticeable — Roald Dahl, Someone Like You, 1953
... the danger from which we barely escaped —Morris R; Cohen, The Faith of a Liberal, 1946
... although I am barely in my dotage —Clifton Daniel, N. Y. Times Mag., 3 June 1984
