词组 | guerrilla, guerilla |
释义 | guerrilla, guerilla The literal meaning of guerrilla in Spanish is "little war." It was once used in English, as in Spanish, to denote irregular warfare carried on by independent bands of fighters, but the word in that sense was replaced more than a hundred years ago by such phrases as guerrilla war and guerrilla warfare. The principal use of guerrilla in English has long been to denote a fighter engaged in such warfare: • ... would train our new guerrillas for all kinds of conditions —Garry Wills, Atlantic, February 1982 The Spanish word for such a fighter is guerrillero, and it has sometimes been suggested that guerrillero should also be the preferred word in English. Guerrillero has almost never been used in English, however, except to refer specifically to Spanish guerrillas. The spellings guerrilla and guerilla are established as reputable variants in English (the Spanish spelling is guerrilla). Most of the evidence in the OED is for the guerilla spelling, but our modern evidence shows clearly that guerrilla is now the more common form. Usage commentators accept both. |
