词组 replete
释义 replete
There is a sense of replete which some critics regard as nonexistent. The problem has to do with the use of replete as a synonym of complete. The OED, which treats this sense of replete as standard, shows that it has been used—although only rarely—since 1601, when it occurred in Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well. Its use has become more frequent in the 20th century, but it still is not especially common. The first to criticize it was Fowler 1926, whose opinion has been more or less repeated by such later commentators as Evans 1957 and Harper 1975, 1985. The distinction they draw between replete and complete begins from a valid observation, that replete normally indicates fullness or abundance. To describe a book as "complete with illustrations" is to simply say that it has illustrations, but to describe it as "replete with illustrations" is to say that it has illustrations in abundance. As far as the critics are concerned, that is where the story ends, but in fact replete is also sometimes used in standard writing to mean "complete," as in the following passages:
... stylized landscape of Deep South farmland at sundown, replete with wheeling buzzards and eroding soil —Time, 19 Mar. 1945
... an elderly doctor replete with whiskers and a young wife who does not love him —Newsweek, 5 Mar. 1951
... preferred to come on ... with all the solemnity of the risen Christ, replete with white cotton pajamas, incense, and the stigmata of his legal persecutions —Theodore Roszak, The Making of a Counter Culture, 1969
... Mr. Gatien's new nightclub-cum-discotheque... a former Episcopal church replete with altars and crucifixes —Laura Landro, Wall Street Jour., 29 Nov. 1983
Replete may have been chosen by some of these writers because it has connotations of abundance and opulence even when its basic denotation is simply "complete."
