词组 | sartorial |
释义 | sartorial Sartorial is a dressy word in more ways than one, and its use may elicit a few grumbles from those who scorn dressiness in language. Two such scorn-ers among usage writers are Fowler 1926, who classes sartorial as "pedantic humor," and Flesch 1964, who dismisses it as "fancy." Anyone determined to avoid its use, however, will have to contend with the fact that it has no synonym, fancy or plain. There are times when sartorial (or sartorially) is the only word that fits, and there are other times when a little dressiness may not be such a bad thing: • ... he observes the preparations of a sartorial dandy —Richard Poirier, A World Elsewhere, 1966 • I use the tie to push me over the edge when I am at my sartorial greatest —E. B. White, letter, 9 Jan. 1967 • Can anyone deny that the appeal of films about the Nazis is partly sartorial? —Anthony Burgess, Saturday Rev., 23 June 1979 • ... on the assumption that sartorial splendor can make up for the notoriously uncomfortable seating arrangements —Paul Hofmann, N. Y. Times, 4 May 1980 • ... divide the delegates into groups sartorially, alco-holically, and conversationally —New Yorker, 18 July 1964 • He stands out sartorially, too —Martin Mayer, N. Y. Times Mag., 7 Feb. 1965 • ... a sartorially impressive figure —Robert Penn Warren, Jefferson Davis Gets His Citizenship Back, 1980 |
