But he also observes that either word can serve in place of the other when its connotations (or lack of connotations) make it an appropriate choice—that is, gesticulation can be used to denote a particularly theatrical or emotional gesture, and gesture can be used to mean "the use of gestures" when the writer wants to avoid the overtly theatrical connotations of gesticulation.
