词组 gesticulation, gesture
释义 gesticulation, gesture
Fowler 1926 notes that the principal meaning of gesticulation is abstract, "the use of gestures" and the principal meaning of gesture is particular, "an act of gesticulation; an expressive bodily movement." But he also observes that either word can serve in place of the other when its connotations (or lack of connotations) make it an appropriate choice—that is, gesticulation can be used to denote a particularly theatrical or emotional gesture, and gesture can be used to mean "the use of gestures" when the writer wants to avoid the overtly theatrical connotations of gesticulation. That description of the ways in which these words are used was accurate in 1926 and is still accurate today:
... show the same interest in dramatic gesticulation and facial expression —E. H. Gombrich, N. Y. Rev. of Books, 12 Mar. 1970
... with a great gesticulation of my whole body I motioned him to stay —Samuel Beckett, Evergreen, June 1967
... dismiss legislation with the impatient gesture of an old man's hand —Lewis H. Lapham, Harper's, January 1972
... the resources of... gesture from which a characterization is composed —Irving Kolodin, Saturday Rev., 3 Apr. 1971
