词组 | plentitude |
释义 | plentitude A 1965 issue of Winners & Sinners and the Oxford American Dictionary maintain that plentitude is not the word; it is plenitude. Plentitude is a less frequent variation of plenitude formed under the influence of plenty. It has been around since 1615 (plenitude is a couple of centuries older) and seems to have been used more than once by Sir Walter Scott. It is used in the same sorts of contexts that plenitude is, but not as frequently. Here are a couple of samples: • Like undertakers, they have a plentitude of gravity, a deficiency of true seriousness —Robert G. Hoyt, Harper's, October 1971 • ... it springs, not from fear and need, but from joy and plentitude —Eric Bentley, New Republic, 21 Mar. 1955 |
