释义 | photo Here is another survivor from Emily Post 1927 (see phone) and from the older commentators (such as MacCracken & Sandison 1917) still to be found, surprisingly, in handbooks like Bell & Cohn 1981 and Prentice Hall 1978. Sellers 1975 says that in Great Britain some people still regard it as a vulgarism. Photo presents quite a different problem from phone. In general use, it has been elbowed aside by picture (and perhaps also by snapshot) so we do not find it in the regular, widespread, popular use that phone enjoys. We find it in schoolbooks, in catalogs, in advertisements, but not very frequently in ordinary prose like these examples: • ... taking flash photos of indigent families —E. L. Doctorow, Ragtime, 1975 • ... isn't just a man who likes his photo all over his books —Herbert Gold, Los Angeles Times Book Rev., 23 May 1971 It is often found attributively in such combinations as photo emulsions, photo editor, photo enlargements, photo negatives. • ... the punchy West German photo weekly —Time, 25 Feb. 1985 In such use it is probably felt to be clearer than picture might be. |
