| 释义 | pinch-hit, pinch hitter Objections to the use of pinch-hit and pinch-hitter in non-baseball contexts in the sense of "substitute" (verb and noun) have been expressed by Evans 1957, Bernstein 1958, 1965, Copperud 1964, and Harper 1975. The basis for this objection is that the pinch hitter is a player sent out to bat in the expectation that he will do better than the player for whom he is to hit. Whatever the merits of such a definition in the context of baseball, in non-baseball use it is the simple notion of substitution that prevails. The verb pinch-hit seems to be more often used than pinch-hitter. The terms are sometimes applied to inanimate subjects. Copperud 1970, 1980 says that the acceptance of pinch hitter as standard "seems beyond doubt." These folks are right. |
