词组 therefor, therefore
释义 therefor, therefore
Therefor and therefore were originally variant spellings of the same adverb. Each came eventually to have a distinct meaning and a distinct pronunciation, however, and they are now regarded as separate words. Therefor, which is pronounced with the principal stress on the second syllable, almost always means "for that" or "in return for that." It is not a word that is now commonly used, except, perhaps, by accountants:
... so far as they relate to accountancy and to managerial responsibility therefor —Jour, of Accountancy, April 1940
... the amount of refunds, if any, which may be requested will not be material, and no provision has been made therefor in the financial statements — Annual Report, General American Transportation Co., 1952
... any expenditure or liability incurred therefor which creates an asset —Wayne K. Goettsche, Arthur Young Jour., Autumn, 1967
Therefore is pronounced with the principal stress on the first syllable. It is, of course, an extremely common word, whose basic meaning is "for that reason; consequently":
... providing a constantly renewed source of food for the larger forms of marine life, which therefore abound —Edward P. Lanning, Peru Before the Incas, 1967
Therefor has also been occasionally used as a synonym of therefore:
... it would not, therefor, be a morpheme —Dwight L. Bolinger, Word, April 1948
... the frog test for pregnancy is probably therefor based on the excess of the luteinizing hormones — Biological Abstracts, January 1943
When used in this way, therefor is pronounced in the same way as therefore. Most readers will undoubtedly regard it simply as a misspelling or typographical error, and it seems safer to keep the two words distinct in spelling.
