词组 tummy
释义 tummy
Tummy originated as baby talk for stomach, and it is still primarily a word used by children. Its use by adults, when not addressing children or meaning to be humorous, can often seem excessively coy (Evans 1957 goes further and describes it as "simply disgusting"). The most common written use of tummy in American English seems to be in advertisements for women's undergarments:
Pull-on girdles of nylon power net, made with reinforced tummy panel —advt., N. Y. Times, 17 June 1956
It also occurs now in the phrase tummy tuck, which denotes a form of plastic surgery more technically known as an abdominal plasty:
... a physician who had once been known as "The Tummy Tuck King of Palm Beach" —Calvin Trillin, Uncivil Liberties, 1982
Use of tummy among the British appears to be somewhat more common, but it has much the same quality as in American English:
... who stands head, shoulders, and tummy button above the low altitude flyers of the Flat —John Trickett, The Sun (London), 20 Nov. 1974
... getting up after a tummy bug to keep the date — Doreen Taylor, Scottish Field, July 1975
