释义 | basic Both basic and basal are relatively recent words formed in the 19th century. Fowler 1926 comments on them; his notion is that both adjectives were formed for use in scientific texts where fundamental might have been misleading. But Fowler notes basic being used in general contexts in place of fundamental, and of this he disapproves. Fowler's disapproval has been echoed by later British commentators such as Phythian 1979 and Longman 1984. Howard 1978, however, notes that basic has won its place and that one would be pedantic to grumble about it. Probably few modern users of basic are aware of the word's origin in scientific writing. Although Fowler laid increasing use of the word to the desire of people to sound "up-to-date & scientific," its shortness has probably had as much to do as anything with its rapid establishment. Phythian is especially unhappy with the expressions basic idea and basic reason. The dearth of evidence in our recent files for these combinations suggests that they are probably speech forms and are not much used in edited prose. It would be pointless, if not pedantic, for us to censure speech forms in a book for writers. Related to these speech forms is a use of basic after your that is apparently intended to be humorous: • Madison, New Jersey ... is your basic polyester suburbia —Alan Rich, New York, 6 Oct. 1975 • In both versions, Allegra Clayton, your basic blonde heroine, is cool,... accomplished —Eden Ross Lip-son, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 23 Dec. 1984 |
