chastise Copperud 1970, 1980 and Fowler 1926 warn against spelling this word chastize. The OED shows the spelling with z in use—along with a variety of other spellings—from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Webster 1909 marks chastize as a "reformed spelling"—apparently one of the aims of the reform movement was to have verbs in -ise spelled in the same way as verbs in -ize. We have very little 20th century evidence of the -ize spelling. We suggest that you go with the overwhelming majority and spell it chastise. |
