| 释义 | Chicano The remarks on this term in Copperud 1980, Bremner 1980, and Harper 1985 suggest that there is some misapprehension about this word. It is a word, as Copperud notes, applied by some Mexican-Americans to themselves. It seems to have been introduced into American English in the late 1940s or early 1950s. It was first used by politically active groups and hence is a term considered offensive by those Mexican-Americans of different or opposed political views. Our evidence for objection to Chicano suggests that the objection is primarily political; we have no evidence from printed sources that Chicano has been used as a pejorative term by either Mexican-Americans or other Americans. Chicano has been frequently used in the Anglo press since 1968 or 1969 and is still in frequent use. The term is no longer limited to certain militant groups of Mexican-Americans; with wider application it has become a less politicized term, and expressed objection to it has largely subsided, although there are undoubtedly still some Mexican-Americans who find it offensive. We have had a correspondent object to it as recently as 1982. Contrary to the opinion of Copperud, Chicano is more frequently capitalized now than it used to be. |
