We hunted through our collection of usage books and stylebooks without learning much. According to the books, prefixed names retain the prefix when abbreviated: de Belleville should be abbreviated de B. We found this to be done in practice when we encountered V. de S. Pinto, George de F. Lord, and Madame de B. And the Irish writer Myles na gCopaleen abbreviated his name to M. na gC. But we found no advice for O'Hara and McCarthy. So we began looking for evidence instead of guidance. It appears that the same prefixing principle applies: John O'Hara became J. O'H. and Georgia O'Keeffe became G. O'K. For the Mc's we found Robert McC. Adams and George McT. Kahin. We conclude, then, that standard practice is to keep the capitalized initial elements when abbreviating. |
