词组 | kneel |
释义 | kneel Kneel belongs to a group of verbs which offer a choice of variants for the past and past participle. For kneel, either kneeled or knelt is considered standard. Knelt occurs just a little more frequently than does kneeled in contemporary usage: • The boy knelt and held out his arms —E. L. Doctorow, Ragtime, 1975 • Warren walked in bowed, kneeled on the straw mat —E. L. Doctorow, Loon Lake, 1979 The OED tells us that kneeled was the regular spelling until the latter part of the 19th century, when knelt began appearing. Shakespeare, for instance, never used knelt. |
