Hern still exists in nonstandard varieties of English. Hers was frequently spelled with an apostrophe two or three hundred years ago: • ... I sent for a dozen bottles of her's —Samuel Pepys, diary, 17 June 1663 Bishop Lowth used the form with the apostrophe in his grammar book of 1762.
