词组 good and
释义 good and
Good and functions as an intensive adverb. A few other adjectives—nice is the most familiar one— can also be joined by and to another adjective to function as an intensive. Nice and is generally restricted to approving phrases (like nice and warm), but good and is a straight intensive:
Why you have been good and busy! —Ellen Terry, letter, 1 Dec. 1896
His Irish was good and up —Wilfrid Sheed, People Will Always Be Kind, 1973
... she'll be good and ready to come home by then —Flannery O'Connor, letter, 16 May 1963
I'll be good and damned if I give Hussey a bottle of vermouth to change the padré into a Presbyterian — George Jean Nathan, letter, in The Intimate Notebooks of George Jean Nathan, 1932
As these examples suggest, good and is not often found in very lofty surroundings. Evans 1961 thinks it is used chiefly in spoken American English; several handbooks also suggest it is informal or colloquial. In spite of Ellen Terry, the usage seems to be primarily American.
