词组 | vulnerable |
释义 | vulnerable Derived from the Latin verb vulnerare "to wound," vulnerable originally meant "capable of being physically wounded." It is now rarely used with that meaning, but it continues to thrive in modern English because of the popularity of its figurative, extended senses. When used figuratively, vulnerable is often followed by the preposition to: • "... you're less vulnerable to whatever horrors happen in life." —Herman Wouk, Marjorie Morning-star, 1955 • This timetable was, of course, terribly vulnerable to bad weather —John Kenneth Galbraith, The Scotch, 1964 • ... those institutions most vulnerable to government pressure —Daniel P. Moynihan, Atlantic, August 1968 |
