词组 | knit, knitted |
释义 | knit, knitted As many commentators observe, the past tense and past participle of knit can be either knit or knitted. A few critics in the early 20th century regarded knitted as an error, but that issue was apparently laid to rest when Fowler 1926 accepted both forms, while noting some distinctions in their use. Our evidence shows that the two forms are interchangeable in most contexts ("a knit/knitted shirt"; "he knit/knitted his brows in concentration"). Knit is definitely preferred, however, with such adverbs as closely and tightly in figurative use: • They rejected the closely knit but stifling family interaction —A. I. Rabin, Psychology Today, September 1969 • ... a loosely knit state which allows for great variety —John W. Holmes, The Lamp, Fall 1971 • Always alone among strangers, the family grew tightly knit —Ross Milloy, N. Y. Times Mag., 6 Apr. 1980 |
