词组 collective
释义 collective
Copperud 1964, 1970, 1980 cocks an individual snook at the use of the adjective collective in such uses as "industry has its collective eye on Washington" and "experts cocked their collective eyebrow at the prediction." This use of collective in the sense "shared by all members of a group" is owing to the writer's intention of extending a figure of speech normally associated with an individual to a group. It is in frequent and unnoticed use with many nonanatomical nouns:
... the most fantastic outburst of collective insanity —Noam Chomsky, Columbia Forum, Winter 1969
... the Republican Party's collective memory — Emmet John Hughes, Saturday Rev., 13 Dec. 1975
... a collective shudder swept across the city —Robert Bloch, Cosmopolitan, November 1972
... we can almost hear the bobby-soxers in the listening audience offer a collective swoon —Mel Gussow, N.Y. Times, 30 Nov. 1979
... the only ethnic example of collective culinary genius —Peter S. Feibleman, Saturday Rev., 4 Sept. 1976
... citizens can continue to rely on their own collective judgment —Barry Commoner, Columbia Forum, Spring 1968
... good for our collective health —Albert Rosenfeld, Saturday Rev., 14 Oct. 1978
When the figure of speech involves an anatomical noun, Copperud takes disapproving notice, but the usage is not really different.
It [language] takes its locus in their collective larynx and ear —Paul Ziff, Semantic Analysis, 1960
The effulgent reality is in the collective brain — Anthony Burgess, Saturday Rev., 2 Sept. 1978
... washing and scouring the great collective brain —Norman Mailer, Harper's, March 1971
... or even to scratch their collective head —String-fellow Barr, Center Mag., May 1968
If you feel the urge to use this sort of figurative expression, we advise you to keep the noun modified by collective in the singular. Notice that the plural noun in the following two examples makes collective unnecessary:
... if we hide our collective heads in the sand — James V. McConnell, Psychology Today, April 1970
... the promises ... that flowed so trippingly off their collective tongues — Women's Wear Daily, 26 Mar. 1973
