| 释义 | cold slaw, coleslaw Evans 1962 and Reader's Digest 1983 comment on the form cold slaw used for coleslaw. Cold slaw is an American folk etymology based on the Dutch koolsla. It dates back to 1794 and is about a half century older than the presently much more common and etymologically more accurate coleslaw. Evans says that most of the populace gets cold slaw, but our files show relatively little recent evidence of the term's use in print. It undoubtedly still appears on menus, however, and the Dictionary of American Regional English has collected evidence on its questionnaires as recently as 1970. |
