词组 worst way
释义 worst way
The adverbial phrase the worst way originated in American speech during the 19th century. It is basically equivalent to very much, but it has forceful connotations all its own. To want something very much is not quite the same as to want it the worst way. The worst way, now often used with in, typically implies an intense, almost desperate or childlike longing:
... he wanted to be a football star in the worst way —Time, 13 Aug. 1956
She knew I wanted a guitar in the worst way —Wynn Fay, quoted in Valley Advocate, 19 Sept. 1979
The use of this phrase in writing has occasionally been discouraged in handbooks on usage, dating back to MacCracken & Sandison 1917. Our evidence shows that its written use is rare and is limited to contexts having an informal or conversational tone.
