词组 wrath, wrathful, wroth
释义 wrath, wrathful, wroth
These related words have had overlapping uses in centuries past, but they are now easily distinguished. Wrath is the noun:
... would call down bureaucratic wrath on the fledgling systems analysis office —I. F. Stone, N. Y. Rev. of Books, 11 Mar. 1971
      Wrathful is the usual adjective:
... in an effort to appease wrathful farmers —IV. Y. Times, 1 Nov. 1986
And wroth is an adjective synonymous with wrathful that now rarely occurs except in the phrase wax wroth, which normally serves as a playful or deprecating way of saying "grow angry":
... the India-haters who get their kicks by waxing wroth over what most of us take for granted — Joseph Kraft, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 27 Dec. 1971
Fowler 1926 proposed as a further distinction that wrathful be considered the attributive adjective (as in "a wrathful God") and wroth the predicative adjective (as in "God was wroth"), but this distinction is not observed. Wrathful is the usual choice regardless of its position in the sentence:
Then he became wrathful in a dry legal fashion — Agatha Christie, Sad Cypress, 1940
Fowler also preferred \\\\"rōth\\\\ (rhyming with both) as the pronunciation of wroth, but the pronunciation now favored in both American and British English is \\\\roth\\\\ (rhyming with cloth).
