And, in fact, a bewildering array of pronunciations of this word can be found in our files. The two most common pronunciations in American English are \\\\lē-ǝ-,zän\\\\ and \\\\lē-'ā-,zän\\\\, both of which are established in standard speech. The variant \\\\'lā-ǝ-,zän\\\\ is well entrenched in the military, but in other circles it is widely regarded as an error. Its use by Ronald Reagan, for example, is criticized by Safire 1984. The spelling of liaison also gives many people trouble.
