| 释义 | temperature A few critics have gotten hot under the collar about the use of temperature to mean "fever," as in "You look like you're running a temperature." This sense of temperature is extremely common in speech but rare in writing. Its first use is recorded in the OED as from near the end of the 19th century. This sense of temperature has an illogical quality which some people are bound to find irritating (Gowers in Fowler 1965 calls it "absurd" and "foolish") and some others are bound to find appealing. Most people, of course, will not give it a second thought in their speech and will not think to use it in writing. |
