词组 temblor, tremblor, trembler
释义 temblor, tremblor, trembler
A synonym for earthquake, temblor owes its existence as an English word in part to the presence of a large Hispanic population in the southwestern U.S. and in part to the activities of the San Andreas Fault. It is taken directly from Spanish, in which its literal meaning is "trembling." It became established as an English word in the early 20th century, when it was widely used in reports of California earthquakes, including the one that nearly destroyed San Francisco in 1906. It has never been a common word, however. The tendency among some speakers and writers unfamiliar with Spanish has been to make it more recognizably English by inserting an r after the initial t, and sometimes also by changing the o to an e:
      ... registered 7.3 on the Richter Scale—classifying as a major tremblor —N.Y. Times (UPI), 1 Dec. 1975
... the storms, floods, dust and tremblors that somehow conditioned their lives —Kathryn Livingston, Town & Country, November 1980
... shattered show business traditions like a point eight [sic] trembler on the San Andreas fault — Ralph J. Gleason, Rolling Stone, 26 Oct. 1972
... there are some 500 earthquakes in California each year. Most are minor tremblers —Brad Knickerbocker, Christian Science Monitor, 30 Jan. 1980
Temblor is still the usual spelling, however, and is still regarded by many people as the only correct one, though the variants are recognized by very large dictionaries such as Webster's Third.
