Ethel Strainchamps in College English, January 1966, found crochet for crotchet in the New York Times, the Saturday Review, and the New Statesman; our files also have the New York Times Book Review and Harper's. We have crochety for crotchety in a publication of The National Council of Teachers of English, in Boy's Life, and in Current Biography. We have even see crocheted (the past of the verb crochet) rendered as croched in a mail-order catalog. These are all careless errors. |
