词组 cripple
释义 cripple
As a noun for a person with a physical disability cripple seems to have been largely replaced by such euphemisms as handicapped, disadvantaged, and disabled—a replacement noted by Malcolm Muggeridge (in Esquire, April 1974) and Robert A. Nisbet (in Fair of Speech, 1985). It is found only occasionally now:
They don't want weakness in the Presidency. If they do pick a cripple, it'll be out of superstition—they think he's stronger than other people, inner strength and all that —Wilfrid Sheed, People Will Always Be Kind, 1973
But modified by some limiting adjective which takes it out of the realm where it is felt to be objectionable, cripple continues to flourish:
... whom he portrays here as a moral cripple lusting for power —Robert Manning, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 23 Sept. 1984
... many may be regarded as dental cripples —A. Bryan Wade, Basic Periodontology, 2d ed., 1965
Not more than twenty years ago homosexuals were told by physicians that they were mental cripples — O. B. Hardison, Jr., Entering the Maze, 1981
... a sentimental, manipulating emotional cripple, who attempted to destroy her children —Anne Roiphe, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 8 July 1984
... failure to have these talents would have set a man apart as a social cripple —Robert Pattison, On Literacy, 1982
