| 释义 | nth Fowler 1926 argues that since n means "an unspecified number" rather than "an infinite number" in mathematics, the derivative use of nth by nonmathematicians to mean "utmost," as in "to the nth degree," is wrong. His opinion has not been heeded in this case. No other commentator objects to the "utmost" sense of nth (Evans 1957 and Copperud 1970, 1980 consider it established in reputable use), and dictionaries have recognized it as standard throughout the 20th century.
