词组 | particular |
释义 | particular Particular is considered an overused adjective by Copperud 1964, Fowler 1965, Phythian 1979, and Janis 1984. They are especially leery of its use following the demonstrative adjectives this and that: • Students get into this particular category too —Margaret Mead, Barnard Alumnae, Winter 1971 • ... had brought me to this particular point in space and time —Norman Cousins, Saturday Rev., 30 Oct. 1971 • ... to change the rules to fit that particular reality — William Johnson, Sports Illustrated, 15 July 1968 Particular adds a certain emphasis in these passages which the critics regard either as unnecessary or nonexistent. Its omission in such cases, if you are of a mind to follow the critics' advice, is easy and painless. Note, however, that in some other cases, especially in negative constructions, particular after this or that has implications which go beyond simple emphasis: • ... discovered that Benitez was not guilty of that particular theft —Current Biography, January 1966 • ... but I did not find this particular manual dull — Willoughby Newton, Saturday Rev., 20 Nov. 1971 The implications are that Benitez was or may have been guilty of other thefts and that Newton did or might very well find other manuals dull. Particular can not be deleted from either passage without some loss of meaning. |
