词组 pass away, pass on, pass
释义 pass away, pass on, pass
A few commentators wrinkle their noses at pass away and pass on as objectionable euphemisms for die. This attitude is perhaps a little unfair, being a strictly modern view of the use. In the past it has been, perhaps, just another word for die. Pass meaning "die" has been in the language since the 14th century; so has pass away. Pass on is a 19th-century term, and pass away was revived in the 19th century after some centuries of apparent disuse. We suspect that these phrases are rather more common in speech than in edited prose.
Of some minor interest is the survival of the intransitive pass, which had once been used by Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Tennyson, in some regional varieties of American English. Commentators have noticed its survival in Mississippi speech. We have a few journalistic examples:
Mrs. Nancy Mahala Flanagan ... passed Sept. 18, 1984 —Atlanta Constitution, 19 Sept. 1984
... a short time before his passing at a ripe old age —Vincent Perry, Dog World, December 1981
... passed into eternal rest on Monday —Houston Post, 14 Sept. 1984
You probably will not have much reason to use pass, pass away, or pass on in most kinds of discursive prose, but if you need them, you can use them. They seem to be part of the mildly euphemistic usage of polite speech; they need not be avoided in such use.
