词组 | past history |
释义 | past history Past history is censured as a redundancy by several commentators, who point out that all history is in the past. The phrase seems to occur more often in speech than in writing, but its use in expository prose is not uncommon: • ... consider the past history of Yakutsk —Wendell Willkie, One World, 1943 • ... a percentage of direct labor based on past history —Ralph E. Cross, Dun's, January 1954 • While most of the remanufactured engine may be new, the past history of its significant pieces ... is unknown —Nicholas E. Silitch, Private Pilot, November 1988 Such usage is idiomatic. In fact, you might not want to delete past in the second example, as its use there helps signal which of the many senses of history the author intended. On the other hand, the past in the first and third examples probably could be omitted. Your use of past history is unlikely to be noticed or criticized by most readers, but if you share the commentators' enthusiasm for expunging redundancies, you will want to avoid it.
