【答】 不能通用。dependent既可用作形容词(作“依靠”解)，又能用作名词(靠……养活的人，家眷)：

1. Promotion is dependent upon your record of success.(ALD)

晋升要靠优良的成绩。

2. Too many young people are dependent on their parents. (FWF)

依靠父母的青年人是太多了。

3. There are 2，500 U. S. military personnel with 6，000 dependents stationed at the twobases. (NP)

两个基地驻扎有美国2500名军事人员及6000名家眷。

dependant只能用作名词(作“靠……养活的人”、“家眷”解)：

A man’s wife and his children are his dependants. (ELD)

男人的妻子和孩子是靠他养活的人。
