an historic event

【问】 an historic event，an historical phenomenon上面的短语取自Webster’s New Dictionaryof Synonyms (P.403)。教科书上一再强调：以辅音开头的词，使用不定冠词时用a，如a history，a hotel; 以元音开头的词，使用不定冠词时用an，如an hour，an honourableaction。但是上述辞典为什么要使用an historic event呢?

【答】 教科书上讲的是正确的，但是有些作者把h音读得非常微弱，甚至于不把[h]音读出来，结果就读成或写成an historic event。这种现象决不是绝无仅有的，因而已引起了语言学家们的重视，并得到认可：

1. an historical novel，an hotel，an herb，an habitual drunkard(CGEL，§5. 11)

2. Two entertaining talks by John Pemble，an historian，on Radio 3 ‘reflected’...on thetuberculous British abroad in the nineteenth century.
