■ late可以是形容词，也可以是副词。 1) 作为形容词，充当表语，主语是人，后面接上 for + 某事或 to inf. 或 in + -ing（动词是瞬时动作的第四类动词），表示主语做某事为时已晚，此时后面的某事或动词起着事实上的谓语的作用，而前面的 to be late 则起着事实上的状语的作用。 - I was ten minutes late for my appointment.我赴约晚了十分钟。

比方两个人约会，某甲按时赴约到达，但是某乙迟迟未到。如果某乙最后还是来到了，事后说 He was late. 这个 was late 就是表示一个“总结”（“他来晚了，有了结果”）。如果不是事后总结归纳，而是事后描述某甲当时苦苦等候的情况（不知某乙怎么样了，来还是不来），说 He was late. 意思就是“他迟迟不来，结果未明。”此时 was late 就是一个无限延续状态。两者中译文是很不一样的。如何区别，要取决于前后文和语境。 2) 如果是自己本来该做的事晚了才做，late 后面用介词 with 加上有关名词。 - You are always late with the rent.你交房租总是过期。
- He was late with lunch today.他今天中饭吃晚了（自己晚吃了）。
- He was late for lunch today.他今天来吃中饭来晚了（可能让别人久等了）。
- You're rather late with your apologies.你道歉已经迟了不少。
3) 但是 late 也可以作为副词，“名正言顺”地起状语作用（而不是像 1) 中那样以表语形式起实际上的状语作用），仍然是表示比通常的时间晚。 - I'll be home late today.我今天要晚回家。
- The shops close late.商店晚关门。
- He married late.他结婚很晚。
4) late in the day 不是字面上的“一天当中晚些时候”，而是两个相反的意思： a) 为时已晚。 - It's a little late in the day to start talking about policy changes.现在才开始谈论改变政策，有点太晚了。
b) 最后赶上，起了作用。 - It was the pensioners' vote late in the day which influenced the election of Mr. Simmons.是领养老金者的投票，最后一刻促成了西蒙斯先生的当选。
5) 作为形容词，可以充当前置定语，修饰一个表示行动或事件的名词，说明这个行动或事件发生过晚。 - I apologize for my late arrival.很抱歉，我来晚了。
- We had a late lunch.我们午饭吃晚了。
- Late applications will not be accepted.过期申请，概不受理。
6) 也可以作为前置定语修饰一个表示时期的名词，将这个时期缩短到它的末期。 - This happened in late September. 这件事发生在九月底（注意：英语的这个表达法很简洁，说 in late September就不用说 at the end of September 了，下同）。
- The house was built in the late eighties.房子是 80 年代末期盖的。
- He was in his late thirties.他三十多不到四十岁。
- He wrote the book in late 1993.他写这本书是在 1993 年年底。
- We'll go there late this month.我们本月底到那边去。
late 后面如果是一天当中的早、午、晚，则 late 可以作为副词，前面不用介词，后面用介词 in，成为 late in the morning, late in the afternoon, late in the evening；也可以 late 作为形容词，说 in the late morning, in the late afternoon, in the late evening。如果 late 后面不是日历时间单位，而是延续某一时段的状态或是以某状态为标志的时段，则 late 也作副词，前面不能加任何介词，后面的名词前面放介词 in。 - late in pregnancy怀孕后期

这个用法，也适用于 early。 7) 作为前置定语修饰一个表示人的名词（即使是专有名词，late 前面也必须有定冠词或其他定指的限定词），意思是“已故的（特别是去世不久的）”。 - the late President Reagan已故的里根总统
- your late husband你已故的丈夫。
但是，late 的这个用法，也引起了一些争论，主要围绕着两个问题： a) 死了多久的人用 the late XX? 年代很久远的，肯定不能用，例如不能说 *the late Confucius。但是刚刚去世的，由于人们对他的去世记忆犹新，也不能用。那么，究竟死去多久到多久的人，可以用 the late XX 来称呼？就上限来说，有人主张五十年，有人主张三十年，有人主张十年到十五年。就下限来说，所涉及的人，通常是有点名气的（或亲友之间熟悉的），但是既然有名气或是熟悉，是否已经去世，似乎广为人知或彼此心照，不必再说 the late XX。因此，对于上限，只能见仁见智；对于下限，也只能看该人的去世造成的信息效应是否已经过去（人们刚刚开始记不清该人已经去世）。 b) the late 究竟是从说话时的角度说的，还是从当时的角度说的？ - The bill was signed by the late President Johnson.法案是已故的约翰逊总统签署的。
有人就批评这不合情理。“已故”的总统，是个死人，怎么能签署法案？经过争论，已经大体上达到一致，认为 the late 相当于 the now dead，也就是说，是从现在说话时的角度而不是当时的角度说的。所以这个句子是站得住的。 8) lately 也是副词，但是意义完全不同，指的是“近来”、“不久以前”，位置可以放在句末或是谓语动词组之中，动词采取现在或过去的完成时。 - I haven't been to the theatre much lately.我近来很少上剧院看戏了。
- I have lately received a number of letters about this.关于这件事，我近来收到了好些来信。
动词也可以采取一般过去时，表示不久之前某一时间点发生的事。 - He lately moved into a new apartment.他不久以前搬进去了一处新的公寓。
而且，lately 还可以指新近开始到现在还在继续的习惯行为，动词可以用一般现在时。 - He used to visit Chicago every two or three months, but lately he goes there about once a week.以往他通常两三个月到芝加哥去一趟，但是最近以来他差不多一个星期去一趟。
