■ floor 与 storey

两者都是指“楼层”，一般可以互用（storey 美国英语作 story）。不过，说具体单数建筑物内部的第几层，用 floor 比用 storey 多些，例如 on the fifth floor。说楼层的数量或复数的几层楼（尤其是从建筑物外部的角度来说），则较多用 storey。

twenty stories above the noise of the garbage trucks that rolled through Manhattan streets every morning before dawn有二十层楼那样高，远远高踞那些每天黎明前隆隆驶过曼哈顿马路的垃圾车之上。

但这并不是绝对的，也可以说 the upper floors of the building 和 a multi-floor building。另外，楼层的编号，英美有差别。美国的排法同中国相同，楼下是一楼 (first floor)，上一层是二楼 (second floor)，如此类推。英国则楼下是 ground floor，上一层（即中国和美国的二楼）是一楼 (first floor)，再上一层是二楼，如此类推，总之，比美国和中国少算一层。
