词组 suggest
释义

■ suggest

  • He suggested dinner the next evening.
  • I suggested three alternatives to them.
  • The only thing I can suggest to you is to tell them the truth.

  • She suggested leaving them a note.

  • He suggested to me that I (should) look for another job.
  • It was you who suggested that I tell my parents.

  • He suggested Smith to us as a suitable candidate.

  • Can you suggest a possible source for this rumor?
  • I suggest (that) he's lying.
  • No one is suggesting (that) you stole the money.
  • I suggest (to you) that you are not telling the whole truth.
  • It would be foolish to suggest that everyone in America is rich.
  • Democrats Suggest Double Standard on Leaks.
  • He also suggested that Washington puts its political interests above the democratic ideals it claims to cherish.

  • What are you trying to suggest by that?
  • Are you suggesting (that) my son is a thief?
  • All the evidence suggests that he was involved.
  • The Supreme Court's 5—4 decision suggests George W. Bush stands a "substantial probability of success."

  • His gray eyes usually suggested a confidence and discretion born from experience.
  • His reaction suggested a guilty conscience.

  • What does this melody suggest to you?
  • We used swaying green curtains to suggest the wood in the play.

6) 中文很普遍的“兼语式”(“建议”某人去做某事)不能套在 suggest 上,也就是说,不能 suggest somebody to do something,要改为 suggest that(that 可省略),从句的谓语动词用虚拟语气(should + inf.

  • What do you suggest we do about it? (John Darnton, The Darwin Conspiracy, p.170)
  • Her uncle suggested that she (should) get (gets) a job in a bank. (*Her uncle suggested her to get...)

  • I suggest that you get a job in a bank.

  • Can you suggest a restaurant to us? (*Can you suggest us a restaurant?)
