■ thankful 与 grateful

1) grateful 大都指由于得到某人给与的好处而怀有感激之心。

• I'm very grateful to you for your help.我很感激您的帮助。
• I'd be so grateful if you do it.您如果这样做，我将十分感激。

thankful 的意义与此接近，但是更多是自我庆幸避免了某种不愉快的遭遇（有点“谢天谢地”的味道），感谢的对象往往不明确，着重自己逢凶化吉的好运气。

• You should be thankful you're fit and well.你身体好好的，应该感到庆幸。
• Let's be thankful we got there in time.幸亏我们及时赶到了那里。
• She was just thankful (that) no one recognized her.她庆幸谁都没有把她认出来。
• I'm only thankful everything went off all right.我庆幸一切都平安渡过了。

两者的副词 thankfully 与 gratefully 也有同样的情况。

• Thankfully, the air in the habisphere was warm... (Dan Brown, Deception Point, p.78)幸亏球形居室里面的空气是暖和的…
• We gratefully acknowledge the following companies for supporting our educational programs.下列各公司对我们的教育节目惠予支持，谨在此表示鸣谢。

但是，两者的界限并不是黑白分明的，因而 thankful 往往也可以用于“感谢某人”。

• I'm thankful for all their help.对于他们的一切帮助，我很感谢。
• I'll always be thankful to her for her advice.对于她的指点，我将永远感激。

而 grateful 也可以表示没有感谢对象的“庆幸”。

• Langdon stepped out of Building C into the open air, grateful to be outside Vetra's flat. (Dan Brown, Angels and Demons, p.48)朗顿走出了 C 号楼，到了露天处，庆幸自己终于离开了维特拉的套间。

2) to be thankful 或 to be grateful 是延续的心理状态，属第一类动词。to thank 则是表示谢意的瞬时动作，属第四类动词（即使用一般现在时，也只是因为属于“当面表态”）。因此，“我很感谢他的帮助”不要译成 *I thank him very much for his help. 要说 I'm very grateful (thankful) to him for his help. 但可以说 Thank you very much for your help. 因为这是当面表示感谢（对“您”可以，对“他”不可）。
