■ toward

1) 这个介词主要是表示动态（“朝向…移动”），但是有时候也有静态的意义（“在靠近…之处”）。动态意义可以是物质的。

• They were heading toward the border.他们向着边境前进。

也可以是抽象的。

• lean toward the opposite opinion向相反的主张倾斜
• work toward a peaceful world朝着和平的世界而努力
• There have been moves toward a settlement.有了一些和解的动向。

静态意义则主要是物质的。

• The farm is toward the mountain.农庄靠山。

但是也有一些动态当中的静态意义，就是从说话者的角度是动态（说了一处之后移动到另一处），而从被描绘的事物或景象的角度来说却是静态。

• further south, toward the Mexican border再往南去，在靠近墨西哥边境的地方
• Towards the top, the grass grows poorly.到了靠近山顶的地方，草就长得很差。

另外，toward 还有一种想象中的动态（其实并不动）的意义（“朝向”）。

• She sat with her back toward the fire.她背对着火炉坐着。
• My room faces toward the south.我的房间朝南。

2) 这个介词在现实语言中有一个许多词典没有收进的词义，就是动词 count 一起使用时，表示“计入（总数）”（可以指在总数中占了份额因而应当扣除，也可以指加入总数之中）。

• Messages in your Bulk folder do not count toward your mailbox storage quota.您的大宗来信文件夹中的来信，不计入你信箱的限额之内。
• But none of the time you were in the United States before you left the country counts toward your time in "continuous residence."但是你离开美国之前在美国停留的时间，一律不计入你的“连续居住”时间之内。
• Ask your doctor whether naps count toward your sleep requirement.问问你的医生，打盹的时间，算不算你所需睡眠时间的一部分？
• Her time in jail since her arrest Nov. 25 counted toward the sentence. (The Associated Press, Dec. 3, 2007)她自从 11 月 25 日被捕时起被监禁的时间，算在判决徒刑的时间之内。
