1) 另一（不要原来的）。

• I'm too tired. Someone else will have to go.我太累了。让别人去。
• I don't like it here. Let's go somewhere else.这地方我不喜欢。咱们换个地方去吧。
• After all, how else could we watch the giant pandas?说到底，咱们不这样又怎能观察大熊猫呢？
• God is a jokester. Why else would he have created humans with a sense of hope?上帝是喜欢开玩笑的。如果不是，他又为什么创造出抱着希望感的人类呢？
• The experience of China was unlike anything else that had ever happened to me.中国之行的见闻，同我任何别的经历都大不相同。

从这个意义出发，可以引申出否定的意义。

• Some say it is unfair to hold disadvantaged children to rigorous standards. I say it is discrimination to require anything else. (George W. Bush)有人说，对于条件较差的孩子，用严格的标准来要求，未免太不公平。我却要说，如果不这样要求，那倒是歧视了。

2) 再一（保留原有的）。

• Anything else?还要点什么吗？
• What else do you want to know?你们还想知道点什么别的吗？
• Who else was there living in the house?此外还有谁住在这房子里？
• Everyone else is downstairs.其余的人全都在楼下。
• Her past medical history included hay-fever but little else.她过去的病历包括有枯草热，但其他的记载不多。

（美国电影明星 Lauren Bacall 曾在 25 年前写过自传 By Myself，后来 2005 年又增添补充为 By Myself and Then Some，报纸有关此事的报道文章标题就是 Something Else，也是增添之意）。

3) else 可以后面加上 apostrophe's (else's)成为主有形容词。

• You're wearing somebody else's coat.你穿的外衣是别人的。

4) else 前面的不定代词或疑问代词，都只能是单数的（即使实际上是复数事物），它不能与任何复数形式连用。一定要复数时，只能不用代词而改为名词，前面再加上 other 代替 else。

• I didn't see any other people.我没有见到别的人。

5) 本来中国人对于 else 就是不大容易接受的（即使其他一些欧洲语言也没有 else 的对应词）。从中国人的心理，用 other 更为直接顺当。但是最好养成提及地点 (where)、时间 (when)、方式 (how)、原因 (why)、不定人称 (who, someone, anybody, nobody)、不定物 (something, anything, nothing) 时使用 else 的习惯。尤其是与副词连用，如 Where else? Somewhere else? Nowhere else? When else? How else? Why else? 等，中国人不容易习惯，更要下点功夫。

• Websites must increase sales or reduce costs. Why else do companies have them?有了网址，销售额应该增加，或者成本应该降低。要不然，各个公司要网址干啥？
• Excluding fossil fuel combustion, how else do humans affect the carbon cycle?除了燃烧化石燃料之外，人类还以哪些方式影响到碳的循环？
• How else to explain the current US "negotiating" stance: refusing to participate in the ongoing negotiations with Iran and insisting on dealing only through proxies. (Zbigniew Brzezinski)不然的话，美国当前采取的“谈判”立场，也就是拒绝参加目前同伊朗的谈判，坚持只通过代理人来交涉，又作何解释呢？

6) else 也可以作为副词，加在连词 or 后面，表示：
