词组 evolute
释义 evolute
The verb evolute is a back-formation of evolution that originated as an Americanism in the late 19th century. It is synonymous with evolve in both its intransitive and transitive senses:
If those miserable vagrants could only evolute into respectable people—Cambridge (Mass.) Tribune, 15 Aug. 1884 (OED Supplement)
... has been standardizing and slowly evoluting new patterns —Emporia (Kans.) Gazette, 9 Sept. 1927
Evolute is too rarely used to have provoked a major controversy among usage commentators, but the few critics who have taken note of it have, of course, disliked it. Weseen 1928 called it an "inadmissable coinage"; Jensen 1935 asserted that "there is no such word"; and Evans 1957 called it "an ignorant blunder." More recently, William Safire (N.Y. Times Mag., 14 Aug. 1983) has called evolute a mistake, although he acknowledges the possibility that it could one day gain acceptance. The word itself, meanwhile, has continued in uncommon use:
Cows have not evoluted to the stage where they can be born and into production within eight months, yet! —Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, 22 Apr. 1982
Shoulders, though still emphasized, are evoluting — Patricia McColl, N.Y. Times Mag., 6 Oct. 1985
If you use evolute, you can be sure that most of your readers will find it peculiar, if not actually incorrect. Remember that evolve is fully synonymous with evolute and is available as a less problematic substitute.
