释义 | parenting Heritage 1982 contains a usage note informing us that the usage panel finds the verb parent unacceptable. This disapproval is misdirected. The transitive verb parent has existed since the 17th century, but it is not commonly used. You can occasionally see such examples as these: • The twins were parented, it is often held, by the Renaissance —Times Literary Supp., 8 May 1948 • ... the ease with which I parented my own child — Brenda Maddox, N.Y. Times Mag., 8 Aug. 1976 What the panelists were really objecting to is the noun parenting, a recent formation (1958) that has received decidedly mixed reviews in usage circles. The Harper 1985 panel rejected it, although a 39 percent minority found it to be a useful term. Copperud 1980 does not like it, but Safire 1982 finds it "a good new word." While reviews may be mixed, the word is being used with some frequency, perhaps because it says in one word what formerly had to be said in several. Here are some examples; you can make up your own mind as to its appropriateness. • In our most common parenting scenario, we instill ideals into our children, resent it when they challenge us for not living up to them, and then feel reassured when they give ideals up —Ellen Goodman, Springfield (Mass.) Daily News, 7 May 1980 • The strategy for expanding the crane's population involves an ingenious system of surrogate parenting —National Wildlife, December 1982/January 1983 • You will learn about marriage, parenting and caring for children —Frances Baynor Parnell et al., Home-making: Skills for Everyday Living, 1981 • Publishers call them parenting books, and new ones are born every month —Judith Appelbaum, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 19 June 1983 • If your child has this sort of parenting, he will grow up knowing that he is valuable —Anne Allen, Sunday Mirror, 4 June 1967 |
