词组 parallel
释义 parallel
 1. It is not hard to misspell parallel, what with all those l's congregating in strange ways. If it gives you trouble, you can try thinking of the two l's in the middle as parallel lines cutting through the word. Better yet, keep a dictionary handy.
 2. Prepositions that occur idiomatically after the adjective parallel are to and with:
... an undertaking which ran parallel to the more orthodox ... theorizing —Times Literary Supp., 5 June 1969
... a form of expression that for many years ran parallel with his painting —Current Biography, April 1968
To seems to be preferred in mathematical writing:
... a plane parallel to the base of a cone —School Mathematics Study Group, Geometry, Part II, 1965
... with the line y = fîa) parallel to the x-axis — School Mathematics Study Group, Calculus, Part I, 1965
The noun parallel is idiomatically followed by to, with, and between:
... look for a parallel to the all-Brahms recital — Irving Kolodin, Saturday Rev., 13 Nov. 1971
To cite another parallel with Vietnam —Ronald P. Kriss, Saturday Rev., 26 Feb. 1972
The parallel between the treatment of blacks and women by our society —Ruth R. Hawkins, Change, November-December 1969
 3. Simon 1980 finds fault with Joyce Carol Oates for having written "Nor do the parallels between the two American women become too aggressively pointed." According to Simon, "Parallels are lines that run side by side; in no sense can they be pointed." This is not a serious issue, but let us point out the obvious: parallel as used by Oates means "a comparison showing similarity," a sense of the word that is nearly four centuries old and has been recognized as standard in dictionaries since Samuel Johnson's time. In this sense, parallels can indeed be pointed.
