词组 objective
释义 objective
Copperud 1970, 1980 cites a few commentators who object to objective as a noun where object or aim could be used; Shaw 1975, 1987 states roughly the same view. The usage disapproved dates back, according to the OED, to the 1880s. It apparently arose as a shortening of the 19th-century phrase objective point. Our evidence shows that objective tends to be found in serious discursive prose more frequently than in lighter writing.
If you choose to reduce your objective to object, you will pick up one syllable or three letters—not much of a gain, whether you are speaking or writing. We think it is your choice entirely. Here are three genuine examples for you to evaluate:
In October, 1945 the Atomic Energy Commission laid down six objectives for the development of nuclear research —Times Literary Supp., 27 Aug. 1971
... their primary objective is not the enrollment of new voters but changing the party affiliation of old voters —Lawrence King, Commonweal, 9 Oct. 1970
First objective is to collect old newspapers —James Egan, McCall's, March 1971
