词组 replica
释义 replica
Replica is used in the fine arts with the narrow meaning of a copy or reproduction of a work of art made by or under the supervision of the original artist. Fowler 1926, 1965, Bernstein 1958, 1965, 1977, and Shaw 1975, 1987 believe this to be the only proper sense; Kilpatrick 1984 knows it is not but wishes it were. The evidence in the OED suggests, however, that the word has been applied loosely since the middle of the 19th century, when it was first introduced into English. In present-day use it more often refers to a reproduction of some artifact than to a work of art and frequently is used of a miniaturized copy. It is also used figuratively. Some examples:
At the moment, a replica of the Mayflower—or, rather, what purports to be a replica, for nobody knows exactly what the ship looked like—is being built in England —E. J. Kahn, Jr., New Yorker, 1 Oct. 1955
The Langley Research Center has designed, constructed, and tested a 1/5-scale replica model of the Saturn SA-1 launch vehicle —Harry L. Runyan & Robert W. Leonard, Structures for Space Operations, December 1962
... chemists learned how to make laboratory replicas of increasingly complex natural products — Barry Commoner, New Yorker, 2 Oct. 1971
Bottex now sits beside the cathedral and paints replicas of "The Last Supper" for tourists. But he uses the visitor's face for the Judas —Caleb Pirtle III, Southern Living, November 1971
... building a bridge that was said to be an exact replica of one of the bridges that Caesar built across the Rhine —Merle Miller, Plain Speaking, 1973
... transforming some of the shore and lake country of southern Maine ... into replicas of suburban shopping malls —Morgan McGinley, N.Y. Times, 12 Aug. 1984
Three musical shows, all rehearsing under the impression that they were replicas of "South Pacific," opened and folded in jig time —Groucho Marx, letter, 3 Oct. 1950
Intensifying adjectives such as exact, authentic, and perfect are sometimes used with replica to stress fidelity of detail. They are harmless, and at any rate are more common in advertising matter than in other contexts.
