释义 | syndrome Reader's Digest 1983 and a few British commentators—Gowers 1973, Howard 1977, Phythian 1979, and Longman 1988—note that the figurative use of the medical term syndrome has gotten a bit out of hand and suggest that it is overused. Most of the British commentators are especially displeased when the word is used with the verb suffer; since a syndrome is not a disease, they say, suffer is the wrong verb. Our evidence shows that syndrome is in fact a very common word these days. We do not find it used extremely often with suffer, but "suffer from the x syndrome" does seem to be one recurrent pattern of metaphorical use. The following examples constitute a typical sampling of our evidence: • This second book suffers from a mild case of sequel syndrome. It simply does not rise to the same heights as the first —Aaron Latham, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 27 Nov. 1983 • Now, I am not advocating messianic leadership. I think the Moses syndrome has run its course for us —Orde Coombs, Harper's, January 1972 • ... the whole accusation-and-guilt syndrome that had plagued the marriage —Cyra McFadden, The Serial, 1977 • ... although it did present opponents of the 'bestseller' syndrome with a ready opportunity —British Book News, June 1974 • ... there's that rare and wonderful film that does transmit a feeling of joy, a pure pleasure syndrome —Judith Crist, New York, 5 Mar. 1973 • It's the old Marilyn Monroe syndrome. Nobody takes a pretty girl seriously —Farrah Fawcett-Majors, quoted in People, 3 Jan. 1977 • ... the need for constantly increasing profits, as we discussed earlier—the result of the price/earnings syndrome among analysts, investors and corporate management —Ray Brady, quoted in Dun's, October 1971 • ... the author's quest plunges you into the Sancho Panza syndrome —Times Literary Supp., 3 Nov. 1966 • Following the book-reviewer's syndrome, I searched for errors and omissions —A. J. Dessler, Science, 5 Apr. 1968 |
